Don't be vague! If you mean to say something, just say it instead of being cryptic.
Be original! First off, it's rude to rip off other's work. Second, there's only one you out there, so show us what you've got!
Go for emulation over imitation if you are paying homage to a poet's style.
Have fun. None of these tips are rules. If there is a rule for poetry, it should be to have fun. Poetry is meant to be enjoyed and to enjoy the process of writing. It can be cathartic, so if you're focused on 'rules', you may not experience the benefits of poetry.
